BACKGROUND: Respiratory distress is the leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide, and prenatal exposure to air pollution is associated with adverse long-term respiratory outcomes; however, the impact of prenatal air pollution exposure on neonatal respiratory distress has not been well studied. OBJECTIVES: We examined associations between prenatal exposures to fine particular matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) with respiratory distress and related neonatal outcomes. METHODS: We used data from the Maternal-Infant Research on Environmental Chemicals (MIREC) Study, a prospective pregnancy cohort (n=2,001) recruited in the first trimester from 10 Canadian cities. Prenatal exposures to PM2.5 (n=1,321) and NO2 (n=1,064) were estimated using land-use regression and satellite-derived models coupled with ground-level monitoring and linked to participants based on residential location at birth. We calculated odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for associations between air pollution and physician-diagnosed respiratory distress in term neonates in hierarchical logistic regression models adjusting for detailed maternal and infant covariates. RESULTS: Approximately 7% of newborns experienced respiratory distress. Neonates received clinical interventions including oxygen therapy (6%), assisted ventilation (2%), and systemic antibiotics (3%). Two percent received multiple interventions and 4% were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Median PM2.5 and NO2 concentrations during pregnancy were 8.81 µg/m3 and 18.02 ppb, respectively. Prenatal exposures to air pollution were not associated with physician-diagnosed respiratory distress, oxygen therapy, or NICU admissions. However, PM2.5 exposures were strongly associated with assisted ventilation (OR per 1-µg/m3 increase in PM2.5=1.17; 95% CI: 1.02, 1.35), multiple clinical interventions (OR per 1-µg/m3 increase in PM2.5=1.16; 95% CI: 1.07, 1.26), and systemic antibiotics, (OR per 1-µg/m3 increase in PM2.5=1.12; 95% CI: 1.04, 1.21). These associations were consistent across exposure periods-that is, during prepregnancy, individual trimesters, and total pregnancy-and robust to model specification. NO2 exposure was associated with administration of systemic antibiotics (OR per 1-ppb increase in NO2=1.03; 95% CI: 1.00, 1.06). DISCUSSION: Prenatal exposures to PM2.5 increased the risk of severe respiratory distress among term newborns. These findings support the development and prioritization of public health and prenatal care strategies to increase awareness and minimize prenatal exposures to air pollution. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP12880.

A recent study of the health of Indigenous children in four First Nations Communities in remote northwestern Ontario found that 21% of children had been admitted to hospital for respiratory infections before age 2 years. Here we report a detailed analysis of the housing conditions in these communities. We employed a variety of statistical methods, including linear regression, mixed models, and logistic regression, to assess the correlations between housing conditions and loadings of biocontaminants (dust mite allergens, fungal glucan, and endotoxin) and indoor concentrations of PM2.5, CO2, benzene, and formaldehyde. The houses (n = 101) were crowded with an average of approximately 7 people. Approximately 27% of the homes had sustained CO2 concentrations above 1500 ppm. Most homes had more than one smoker. Commercial tobacco smoking and the use of non-electric heating (e.g., wood, oil) were associated with increased fine particle concentrations. Over 90% of the homes lacked working Heat Recovery Ventilators (HRVs), which was associated with increased fine particle concentrations and higher CO2. Of the 101 homes, 12 had mold damage sufficient to increase the relative risk of respiratory disease. This resulted from roof leaks, through walls or around the windows due to construction defects or lack of maintenance. A similar percentage had mold resulting from condensation on windows. Endotoxin loadings were much higher than any previous study in Canada. This work provides evidence for the need for more effort to repair existing houses and to ensure the HRVs are properly installed and maintained.

OBJECTIVES: To study the effects of grape seed proanthocyanidins (GSP) combined with allicin on serum lipids level and vascular damage in a rat model of hyperlipidemia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: SD rats(male, 170-220 gn= 40) were randomized into five groups (n = 8/group): modelhigh fat and cholesterol diet; controlnormal diet; model+low-dose (GSP+allicin )(GSP 45mg/kg, allicin 30mg/kg, orally); model+high-dose (GSP+allicin) (GSP180mg/kg, allicin 90mg/kg, orally) and positive control (model+simvastatin (4 mg/kg)). Normal control group was fed conventionally, and remaining four groups were fed high cholesterol and fat food to replicate the high fat model. After 9 weeks, the normal control group continued to receive regular feeding, while the other groups continued to receive high-fat feeding. At the same time, model and normal control groups were given equal volume of physiological saline by gavage, and the other treatment groups began to receive corresponding drugs by gavage once a day. After 4 weeks, serum levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) as well as high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in rats were determined. And the body weight of rat, total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA)in serum were identified. The level of endothelin-1(ET-1) was quantitative analysis by ELISA assay. RESULTS: In comparison to normal controls, the model group displayed a marked rise in body weight, an increment in serum concentrations of LDL-C, TG and TC, as well as a decline in HDL (P<0.01), demonstrating successful model replication; All doses of GSP in combination with allicin resulted in a reduction in TG, LDL-C, and TC and an enhancement in HDL-C in contrast to the model control (all P<0.05). High-dose (GSP+allicin ) decreased MDA, and increased T-AOC and SOD activity(all P<0.01). All doses of GSP combined with allicin decreased ET-1 (all P<0.05). In addition, the protective effect of GSP combined with allicin was dose-dependent. CONCLUSIONS: Studies have shown that GSP combined with allicin can significantly improve blood lipids in hyperlipidemic rats, and this mechanism may be related to antioxidants and reduced endothelial damage.

BACKGROUND: The social participation of older people should be encouraged, as it is fundamental to their well-being and the practice of aged care. Therefore, the ability of older persons to participate in society should be strengthened. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the preliminary effects of a WeChat-based educational intervention on the social participation of community-dwelling older adults in China. METHODS: This study was a quasi-experimental design. Twenty-eight community-dwelling older adults participated in a WeChat-based educational intervention. The intervention contents included concepts and preparation of social participation, analysis of participation resources and capabilities, technological adaptation, emotional management, setting of to-do lists, etc. Social participation, self-worth and subjective well-being were measured via the WeChat application on smartphones at baseline, immediately after the intervention, and a 3-month follow-up. We analysed data using paired t-tests and analysis of variance (ANOVA). RESULTS: We found statistically significant improvements in social participation (active aging) (F = 4.408; p < .05) as well as the self-worth dimensions of moral worth (F = 4.135; p < .05) and psychological worth (F = 3.234; p < .05), and the negative-affect dimension of subjective well-being being decreased (F = 2.484; p < .05). CONCLUSIONS: The WeChat-based education intervention can effectively improve social participation and self-worth, and may provide effective preventive healthcare solutions for older adults in China. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: The enormous value of the social participation of independent older adults must be recognised. Nurses can use smartphones to deliver health and social participation information in routine programs in aged care.

Malaria kills more than 500,000 people yearly, mainly affecting Africa and Southeast Asia. The disease is caused by the protozoan parasite from the genus Plasmodium, with Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum being the main species that cause the disease in humans. Although substantial progress has been observed in malaria research in the last years, the threat of the spread of Plasmodium parasites persists. Artemisinin-resistant strains of this parasite have been reported mainly in Southeast Asia, highlighting the urgent need to develop more effective and safe antimalarial drugs. In this context, natural sources, mainly from flora, remain underexplored antimalarial spaces. The present mini-review explores this space focusing on plant extracts and some of their isolated natural products with at least in vitro antiplasmodial effects reported in the literature comprising the last five years (2018-2022).

Candida parapsilosis is an emerging major human fungal pathogen. Echinocandins are first-line antifungal drugs for the treatment of invasive Candida infections. In clinical isolates, tolerance to echinocandins in Candida species is mostly due to point mutations of FKS genes, which encode the target protein of echinocandins. However, here, we found chromosome 5 trisomy was the major mechanism of adaptation to the echinocandin drug caspofungin, and FKS mutations were rare events. Chromosome 5 trisomy conferred tolerance to echinocandin drugs caspofungin and micafungin and cross-tolerance to 5-flucytosine, another class of antifungal drugs. The inherent instability of aneuploidy caused unstable drug tolerance. Tolerance to echinocandins might be due to increased copy number and expression of CHS7, which encodes chitin synthase. Although copy number of chitinase genes CHT3 and CHT4 was also increased to the trisomic level, the expression was buffered to the disomic level. Tolerance to 5-flucytosine might be due to the decreased expression of FUR1. Therefore, the pleiotropic effect of aneuploidy on antifungal tolerance was due to the simultaneous regulation of genes on the aneuploid chromosome and genes on euploid chromosomes. In summary, aneuploidy provides a rapid and reversible mechanism of drug tolerance and cross-tolerance in C. parapsilosis.

BACKGROUND: Cooking is a substantial contributor to air pollutant exposures in many residences. Effective use of kitchen ventilation can mitigate exposure; however, information on its availability, usage, and potential to increase its use across the population has been limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to obtain nationally representative information on cooking methods, kitchen ventilation availability and usage, and the potential for education to increase effective usage. METHODS: An online survey was sent to a representative sample of Canadian homes to collect data on cooking methods, the presence and use of mechanical kitchen ventilation devices, perceived device performance, and willingness to implement mitigation strategies. Responses were weighted to match key demographic factors and analyzed using non-parametric statistics. RESULTS: Among the 4500 respondents, 90% had mechanical ventilation devices over the cooktop (66% of which were vented to the outside), and 30% reported regularly using their devices. Devices were used most often for deep-frying, followed by stir-frying, sautéing or pan-frying, indoor grilling, boiling or steaming. Almost half reported rarely or never using their ventilation devices during baking or oven self-cleaning. Only 10% were fully satisfied with their devices. More frequent use was associated with the device being vented to the outdoors, having more than two speed settings, quiet operation if only one speed, covering over half of the cooktop, and higher perceived effectiveness. After being informed of the benefits of kitchen ventilation, 64% indicated they would consider using their devices more often, preferentially using back burners with ventilation, and/or using higher ventilation device settings when needed. IMPACT: This study provides population-representative data on the most used cooking methods, kitchen ventilation availability and usage, and influencing factors in Canadian homes. Such data are needed for exposure assessments and evaluating the potential to mitigate cooking-related pollutant exposures via more effective use of kitchen ventilation. The data can be reasonably extrapolated to the United States, given the similarities in residential construction practices and cultural norms between the two countries.

Microwave ablation can produce immune activation due to thermal effects. However, the nonthermal effects of microwaves on the immune system are still largely unexplored. In this study, we sequentially exposed rats to 1.5 GHz microwave for 6 min and 2.8 GHz microwave for 6 min at an average power density of 5, 10, and 30 mW/cm2. The structure of the thymus, spleen, and mesenteric lymph node were observed, and we showed that multifrequency microwave exposure caused tissue injuries, such as congestion and nuclear fragmentation in lymphocytes. Ultrastructural injuries, including mitochondrial swelling, mitochondrial cristae rupture, and mitochondrial cavitation, were observed, especially in the 30 mW/cm2 microwave-exposed group. Generally, multifrequency microwaves decreased white blood cells, as well as lymphocytes, monocytes, and neutrophils, in peripheral blood, from 7 d to 28 d after exposure. Microwaves with an average density of 30 mW/cm2 produced much more significant inhibitory effects on immune cells. Moreover, multifrequency microwaves at 10 and 30 mW/cm2, but not 5 mW/cm2, reduced the serum levels of several cytokines, such as interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1α), IL-1ß, interferon γ (IFN-γ) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), at 7 d and 14 d after exposure. We also found similar alterations in immunoglobulins (Igs), IgG, and IgM in serum. However, no obvious changes in complement proteins were detected. In conclusion, multifrequency microwave exposure of 1.5 GHz and 2.8 GHz caused both structural injuries of immune tissues and functional impairment in immune cells. Therefore, it will be necessary to develop an effective strategy to protect people from multifrequency microwave-induced immune suppression.

Antifungal drug tolerance is a response distinct from resistance, in which cells grow slowly above the MIC. Here, we found that the majority (69.2%) of 133 Candida albicans clinical isolates, including standard lab strain SC5314, exhibited temperature-enhanced tolerance at 37°C and 39°C, and were not tolerant at 30°C. Other isolates were either always tolerant (23.3%) or never tolerant (7.5%) at these three temperatures, suggesting that tolerance requires different physiological processes in different isolates. At supra-MIC fluconazole concentrations (8 to 128 µg/mL), tolerant colonies emerged rapidly at a frequency of ~10-3. In liquid passages over a broader range of fluconazole concentrations (0.25 to 128 µg/mL), tolerance emerged rapidly (within one passage) at supra-MICs. In contrast, resistance appeared at sub-MICs after 5 or more passages. Of 155 adaptors that evolved higher tolerance, all carried one of several recurrent aneuploid chromosomes, often including chromosome R, alone or in combination with other chromosomes. Furthermore, loss of these recurrent aneuploidies was associated with a loss of acquired tolerance, indicating that specific aneuploidies confer fluconazole tolerance. Thus, genetic background and physiology and the degree of drug stress (above or below the MIC) influence the evolutionary trajectories and dynamics with which antifungal drug resistance or tolerance emerges. IMPORTANCE Antifungal drug tolerance differs from drug resistance: tolerant cells grow slowly in drug, while resistant cells usually grow well, due to mutations in a few known genes. More than half of Candida albicans clinical isolates have higher tolerance at body temperature than they do at the lower temperatures used for most lab experiments. This implies that different isolates achieve drug tolerance via several cellular processes. When we evolved different strains at a range of high drug concentrations above inhibitory levels, tolerance emerged rapidly and at high frequency (one in 1,000 cells) while resistance appeared only later at very low drug concentrations. An extra copy of all or part of chromosome R was associated with tolerance, while point mutations or different aneuploidies were seen with resistance. Thus, genetic background and physiology, temperature, and drug concentration all influence how drug tolerance or resistance evolves.

Candida albicans is a prevalent, opportunistic, human fungal pathogen. Antifungal drug resistance and tolerance are two distinct mechanisms of adaptation to drugs. Studies of mechanisms of drug resistance are limited to the applications of high doses of drugs. Few studies have investigated the effects of subinhibitory amounts of drugs on the development of drug resistance or tolerance. In this study, we found that growth in a subinhibitory amount of fluconazole (FLC), a widely used antifungal drug, for just a short time was sufficient to induce aneuploidy in C. albicans. Surprisingly, the aneuploids displayed fitness loss in the presence of subinhibitory FLC, but a subpopulation of cells could tolerate up to 128 µg/mL FLC. Particular aneuploidy (ChrR trisomy) caused tolerance, not resistance, to FLC. In the absence of FLC, the aneuploids were unstable. Depending on the karyotype, aneuploids might become completely euploid or maintain particular aneuploidy, and, accordingly, the tolerance would be lost or maintained. Mechanistically, subinhibitory FLC was sufficient to induce the expression of several ERG genes and as well as the drug efflux gene MDR1. Aneuploids had a constitutive high-level expression of genes on and outside the aneuploid chromosomes, including most of the ERG genes as well as the drug efflux genes MDR1 and CDR2. Therefore, aneuploids were prepared for FLC challenges. In summary, aneuploidy provides a rapid and reversible strategy of adaptation when C. albicans is challenged with subinhibitory concentrations of FLC. IMPORTANCE Genome instability is a hallmark of C. albicans. Aneuploidy usually causes fitness loss in the absence of stress but confers better fitness under particular stress conditions. Therefore, aneuploidy is considered to be a double-edged sword. Here, we extend the understanding of aneuploidy. We found that aneuploidy arose under weak stress conditions but that it did not confer better fitness to the stress. Instead, it was less fit than its euploid counterparts. If the stress was withdrawn, aneuploidy spontaneously reverted to euploidy. If the stress became stronger, aneuploidy enabled subpopulation growth in a dose-independent manner of the stress. Therefore, we posit that aneuploidy enables the rapid and reversible development of drug tolerance in C. albicans. Further studies are required to investigate whether this is a general mechanism in human fungal pathogens.

BACKGROUND: Iron-refractory iron deficiency anaemia (IRIDA) is an autosomal recessive iron deficiency anaemia caused by mutations in the TMPRSS6 gene. Iron deficiency anaemia is common, whereas IRIDA is rare. The prevalence of IRIDA is unclear. This study aimed to estimate the carrier frequency and genetic prevalence of IRIDA using Genome Aggregation Database (gnomAD) data. METHODS: The pathogenicity of TMPRSS6 variants was interpreted according to the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) and the Association for Molecular Pathology (AMP) standards and guidelines. The minor allele frequency (MAF) of TMPRSS6 gene disease-causing variants in 141,456 unique individuals was examined to estimate the global prevalence of IRIDA in seven ethnicities: African/African American (afr), American Admixed/Latino (amr), Ashkenazi Jewish (asj), East Asian (eas), Finnish (fin), Non-Finnish European (nfe) and South Asian (sas). The global and population-specific carrier frequencies and genetic prevalence of IRIDA were calculated using the Hardy-Weinberg equation. RESULTS: In total, 86 pathogenic/likely pathogenic variants (PV/LPV) were identified according to ACMG/AMP guideline. The global carrier frequency and genetic prevalence of IRIDA were 2.02 per thousand and 1.02 per million, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of IRIDA is greater than previous estimates.

BACKGROUND: Ambient air pollution is thought to contribute to increased risk of COVID-19, but the evidence is controversial. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the associations between short-term variations in outdoor concentrations of ambient air pollution and COVID-19 emergency department (ED) visits. METHODS: We conducted a case-crossover study of 78 255 COVID-19 ED visits in Alberta and Ontario, Canada between 1 March 2020 and 31 March 2021. Daily air pollution data (ie, fine particulate matter with diameter less than 2.5 µm (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone were assigned to individual case of COVID-19 in 10 km × 10 km grid resolution. Conditional logistic regression was used to estimate associations between air pollution and ED visits for COVID-19. RESULTS: Cumulative ambient exposure over 0-3 days to PM2.5 (OR 1.010; 95% CI 1.004 to 1.015, per 6.2 µg/m3) and NO2 (OR 1.021; 95% CI 1.015 to 1.028, per 7.7 ppb) concentrations were associated with ED visits for COVID-19. We found that the association between PM2.5 and COVID-19 ED visits was stronger among those hospitalised following an ED visit, as a measure of disease severity, (OR 1.023; 95% CI 1.015 to 1.031) compared with those not hospitalised (OR 0.992; 95% CI 0.980 to 1.004) (p value for effect modification=0.04). CONCLUSIONS: We found associations between short-term exposure to ambient air pollutants and COVID-19 ED visits. Exposure to air pollution may also lead to more severe COVID-19 disease.

Biomedical argument mining aims to automatically identify and extract the argumentative structure in biomedical text. It helps to determine not only what positions people adopt, but also why they hold such opinions, which provides valuable insights into medical decision making. Generally, biomedical argument mining consists of three subtasks: argument component identification, argument component classification and relation identification. Current approaches employ conventional multi-task learning framework for jointly addressing the latter two subtasks, and achieve some success. However, explicit sequential dependency between these two subtasks is ignored, which is crucial for accurate biomedical argument mining. Moreover, relation identification is conducted solely based on the argument component pair without considering its potentially valuable context. Therefore, in this paper, a novel sequential multi-task learning approach is proposed for biomedical argument mining. Specifically, to model explicit sequential dependency between argument component classification and relation identification, an information transfer strategy is employed to capture the information of argument component type that is transferred to relation identification. Furthermore, graph convolutional network is employed to model dependency relation among the related argument component pairs. The proposed method has been evaluated on a benchmark dataset and the experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.

It is well-known that microwaves produce both thermal and nonthermal effects. Microwave ablation can produce thermal effects to activate the body's immune system and has been widely used in cancer therapy. However, the nonthermal effects of microwaves on the immune system are still largely unexplored. In the present study, we exposed rats to multifrequency microwaves of 2.8 GHz and 9.3 GHz with an average power density of 10 mW/cm2, which are widely used in our daily life, to investigate the biological effects on the immune system and its potential mechanisms. Both single-frequency microwaves and multifrequency microwaves caused obvious pathological alterations in the thymus and spleen at seven days after exposure, while multifrequency microwaves produced more pronounced injuries. Unexpectedly, multifrequency microwave exposure increased the number of both leukocytes and lymphocytes in the peripheral blood and upregulated the proportion of B lymphocytes among the total lymphocytes, indicating activation of the immune response. Our data also showed that the cytokines associated with the proliferation and activation of B lymphocytes, including interleukin (IL)-1α, IL-1ß and IL-4, were elevated at six hours after exposure, which might contribute to the increase in B lymphocytes at seven days after exposure. Moreover, multifrequency microwave exposure upregulated the mRNA and protein expression of B cell activation-associated genes in peripheral blood. In addition to immune-associated genes, multifrequency microwaves mainly affected the expression of genes related to DNA duplication, cellular metabolism and signal transduction in the peripheral blood and spleen. In conclusion, multifrequency microwaves with 2.8 GHz and 9.3 GHz caused reversible injuries of the thymus and spleen but activated immune cells in the peripheral blood by upregulating mRNA and protein expression, as well as cytokine release. These results not only uncovered the biological effects of multifrequency microwave on the immune system, but also provide critical clues to explore the potential mechanisms.

Multiple chronic conditions (MCCs) affect patients and their spouses. We explored the experience of Chinese older couples living with MCCs to gain deeper understanding of how they cope with MCCs as dyads. A qualitative research design using semi-structured in-depth interviews was conducted. Sixteen couples (≥60 years) were included and a thematic analysis was undertaken using NVivo software. Four themes under an overarching theme "A community of shared destiny" were identified: (i) various changes and impacts in normal life; (ii) perceived dynamic stress and dyadic challenges of MCCs; (iii) acceptance and reflection on MCCs influenced by aging and fatalism; (iv) mutual support and dyadic adjustment based on a shared destiny. Coping with MCCs was a dyadic and periodic journey for older couples. They perceived themselves as a community of shared destiny. Our findings are important for healthcare professionals to develop targeted interventions for older couples living with MCCs.

The aim of this study was to investigate the role and mechanism of Notch2-dependent GATA3+ Treg cells in allergic rhinitis (AR). Samples were collected from patients in the control and AR groups to detect differences in the numbers of GATA3+ Treg cells and their intracellular Notch2 levels. The effects of Notch2 on GATA3+ Treg cell differentiation and function in vitro were detected. AR mice were subjected to adoptive transfer of GATA3+ Treg cells to detect changes in the allergic inflammatory response and Th2 cells. Mice with Treg cell-specific knockout of Notch2 were constructed, and an AR model was established to detect the changes. The number of GATA3+ Treg cells and intracellular Notch2 expression in peripheral blood of the AR group were decreased compared with the controls (P < 0.05), and the number of GATA3+ Treg cells was significantly negatively correlated with the level of allergen-specific IgE (sIgE; P < 0.01). In vitro experiments showed that Notch2 promoted the differentiation and immunosuppressive function of GATA3+ Treg cells, and Notch2 directly promoted GATA3 transcription in Treg cells (P < 0.05). Animal experiments indicated that adoptive transfer of GATA3+ Treg cells reduced the allergic inflammatory response in AR mice (P < 0.05). The number of GATA3+ Treg cells was decreased in gene knockout mice (P < 0.05), and autoimmune inflammation was observed. After modeling, the allergic inflammatory response was further aggravated (P < 0.05). Overall, our findings indicate that Notch2 alleviates AR by specifically increasing GATA3+ Treg cell differentiation. Notch2 expressed in Treg cells is expected to be a new therapeutic target for AR.

With the rapidly increasing application of microwave technologies, the anxiety and speculation about microwave induced potential health hazards has been attracting more and more attention. In our daily life, people are exposed to complex environments with multi-frequency microwaves, especially L band and C band microwaves, which are commonly used in communications. In this study, we exposed rats to 1.5 GHz (L10), 4.3 GHz (C10) or multi-frequency (LC10) microwaves at an average power density of 10 mW/cm2. Both single and multi-frequency microwaves induced slight pathological changes in the thymus and spleen. Additionally, the white blood cells (WBCs) and lymphocytes in peripheral blood were decreased at 6 h and 7 d after exposure, suggesting immune suppressive responses were induced. Among lymphocytes, the B lymphocytes were increased while the T lymphocytes were decreased at 7 d after exposure in the C10 and LC10 groups, but not in the L10 group. Moreover, multi-frequency microwaves regulated the B and T lymphocytes more strongly than the C band microwave. The results of transcriptomics and proteomics showed that both single and multi-frequency microwaves regulated numerous genes associated with immune regulation and cellular metabolism in peripheral blood and in the spleen. However, multi-frequency microwaves altered the expression of many more genes and proteins. Moreover, multi-frequency microwaves down-regulated T lymphocytes' development, differentiation and activation-associated genes, while they up-regulated B lymphocytes' activation-related genes. In conclusion, multi-frequency microwaves of 1.5 GHz and 4.3 GHz produced immune suppressive responses via regulating immune regulation and cellular metabolism-associated genes. Our findings provide meaningful information for exploring potential mechanisms underlying multi-frequency induced immune suppression.

Terahertz waves have been attracting more attention because of their growing applications in brain science. Most of the studies have demonstrated that terahertz waves have a certain positive impact on neurons. They can promote the growth of ganglion processes and the release of neurotransmitters, but the specific mechanism is still largely unexplored. Our study found that terahertz waves could promote neuronal excitability. Moreover, numerous differentially expressed proteins were uncovered via proteomic analysis. Among them, CaMKIIδ is a subunit of CaMKII and could promote the release of neuronal transmitters, regulate the excitability of neurons, and enhance synaptic plasticity. We further demonstrated that CaMKIIδ actively increased synaptic plasticity through the NF-κB pathway. This study provided a potential target for nerve repair and disease treatment.

RESUMO

GNAL mutations (DYT25) have lately been identified as the firstly proven cause of focal adult-onset dystonia. We report here a new mutation in the GNAL gene in two siblings with dystonia. The new mutation is called NM 001,142,339:c.97C > T. Our research emphasizes the possible effects of new mutation on disease risk and the significance of genetic tests for GNAL mutations in confirming the molecular diagnosis.

Foreign body aspiration (FBA) occurs less frequently in adults than in children. Case reports of FBAs occurring in adults after lung surgery are not found in the literature, and this particular condition is often misdiagnosed. We report a case in which the patient was diagnosed after various events. A 56-year-old female patient had undergone robotic-assisted resection of the right upper lobe. The patient recovered well after the operation, with a slight irritant dry cough. Chest computed tomography (CT) examination of the patient showed no obvious abnormality early postoperatively. However, she developed intermittent cough and hemoptysis at six months. Repeat chest CT showed a soft tissue shadow near the bronchus in the lower lobe of the right lung. Cancer recurrence, surgery-related foreign body residue, lymphoid reactive hyperplasia, or other reasons was considered. Further examination revealed a piece of watermelon seed shell blocking the bronchial opening of the lower lung. This case highlights the importance of medical history, careful physical examination and fiberoptic bronchoscopic examination after lung cancer surgery due to lung cancer recurrence risk or FBA.
